About This Waterfall

Driving east along US 2 from Monroe, proceed approximately 10 miles past Skykomish to the signed Deception Falls picnic area, just to the west of the Bridge crossing immediately over Deception Falls. Park and find any of the trails near the creek. Walk downstream, following the signs pointed towards the Nature Loop trail. You'll cross a long wood bridge across a small fork of Deception Creek, then come to a spur leading to a wooden viewing deck in about 500 feet. The Tye River possesses several waterfalls, some quite pretty, others, such as this powerful 16 foot chute, aren't nearly as captivating. Accessed from a nice nature trail at Deception Falls, this is a nice waterfall to walk to for a leg-stretcher, before continuing the drive over Stevens Pass, but not much else. Unfortunately, to get a good picture of the falls, you pretty much need a ultra wide angle lens in order to get the whole falls in one frame. There is access to the falls from the Old Cascade Highway, on the other side of the river, but there is no trail, so I don't recommend that means of access to anyone but experienced hikers. The falls have been known as Monkey Cage Falls within the local Kayaking community since the Tye River had been first run. The name stems from the tendency for people to congregate on the viewing deck, and shout and applaud kayakers who run the falls, like a bunch of monkeys in a cage.
