About This Waterfall

In the city of Egilsstaðir, turn off Highway 1 on to Route 92 where signs point to Seyðisfjörður and Reyðarfjörður. Just under one kilometer later, turn left onto Route 94, then in another 1.7km right onto Route 93, all the while following signs to Seyðisfjörður. Once on Route 93, continue up and over the height of land and down toward Seyðisfjörður for another 19km to a pullout on the right side of the road where monument made out of basalt columns can be seen - the falls are found immediately downstream of here. Cross the stream on the metal footbridge and look for the somewhat poorly defined trail heading downstream along the edge of the gorge. Where the tread becomes less obvious, pick the safest routes down to where each section of the falls are visible.Mulafoss is one of literally dozens of modest waterfalls found along the Fjarðará as it cascades down to join the ocean at the head of Seyðisfjörður. The falls are composed of five distinct leaps in back-to-back fashion where the Fjarðará steps down a narrow gorge. The first step drops 31 feet in a narrow slot canyon just below a small dam which helps retain water for a stream gauge. Shortly below the second and third drops fall 66 feet through jumbled boulders lying on fractured bedrock ledges. The final two tiers plunge 18 and 20 feet over broader, more uniform ledges respectively. Because of how the stream twists through and out of the gorge at the upper half of the falls, the entirety of the falls cannot be seen from any one location. On a side note, while we are almost certain we have the correct location and waterfall identified as bearing the name Mulafoss, because there are literally so many waterfalls along the Fjarðará, it's difficult to determine exactly where the extremities of the falls should be placed. The top of the falls is quite obvious, but there are essentially continuous falls extending downstream between this location and Gufufoss. We have opted to place the bottom of the falls below the fifth consecutive drop, as there is a lengthier pause between that fall and the next one downstream, but an arguments could potentially be made for further segregation or consolidation well. Though not terribly obvious at cursory glance, a trail runs along the length of the Fjarðará as it cascades down the head of the valley and passes literally dozens of waterfalls along the way - a trail sign we encountered near the top of Mulafoss suggested there were 26 distinct waterfalls along the trail. The majority of these waterfalls are not officially named, and cannot be easily accessed from the road on the opposite side of the creek (despite being visible from it) due to the lack of room to pull off - Mulafoss and Gufufoss being the exceptions. The trail isn't terribly obvious as it continues downstream from Mulafoss, but it will offer a multitude of additional views of both this waterfall and many others downstream.
