About This Waterfall

From the junction of US Highway 5 and VT Route 30 in Brattleboro, take VT Route 30 north towards Townshend for five miles, then turn left onto Stickney Brook Road (immediately before crossing Stickney Brook. The falls will be located to the right of the road just over one tenth of a mile up from Route 30. Park were space is available and find any acceptable route down to the falls from the road.Old Jelly Mill Falls is a small but incredibly scenic series of waterfalls and cascades along Stickney Brook found a short distance upstream from where it merges with the West River in Dummerston. The falls drop a total of about 40 feet over a run of about 230 linear feet. The two largest steps of the falls are found in the middle of the formation, dropping about 10 feet and 7 feet nearly back-to-back. A 5-6 foot drop can be found at the top of the series, and numerous smaller ledges that drop 1-2 feet each can be found interspersed between the larger sections. Adjacent to the bottom of the falls on the north bank of the creek is an old rock wall, a remnant of the old Jelly Mill which once stood at the site and now provides the colloquial origin for the name of the falls. Stickney Brook is a small to moderately sized stream, which drains from a basin covering approximately 6.2 square miles, and heading in Sunset Lake. The falls are certainly at their most impressive during the peak of snow melt season in the spring, with the stream spreading out to cover the entire breadth of the broad rock shelves at the falls. However the falls are considerably more scenic (not to mention more accessible) during periods of moderate to low flow, especially in the autumn months when the surrounding forest is in color.
