About This Waterfall

This is the upper of two significant waterfalls fed by seasonal snowfields north of the Russell Glacier in Seattle Park which can be seen plunging onto the western lateral moraine of the Carbon Glacier.Aubrey Haines book "Mountain Fever" describes Philo Falls as having been discovered and named by Henry Sarvant and W. I. Lowry as they descended the mountain from an unsuccessful attempt to summit via a route between the Carbon and Winthrop Glaciers in the summer of 1893. Edward Meany's "Mount Rainier: A Record of Exploration" also documents the falls being described by I.C. Russell during an 1896 expedition, but it seems that Sarvant and his partner were likely the first to spot the falls.
