Pond Brook Falls

Description

Pond Brook Falls is a series of long, slabby slides and cascades found where its namesake stream drops to meet Nash Stream in the Great North Woods region of New Hampshire. The falls consist of five somewhat distinct sections, all of which generally bleed together into one long series of cascades that drops a total of 107 feet in a linear run of about 400 feet. Because of the great length of the falls, the whole formation cannot be seen from any one perspective, but there are three or four distinct areas from which to see parts of the falls.
The lowest section of the falls is seen as the access trail encounters the pool at the base of the falls, where the stream can be seen accelerating through a narrow choke point and dumping into a small pool. Climbing further up reveals the largest section of the falls, a steep cascade which leads into a long smooth waterslide that swishes in a curved path and ends by plunging over a clamshell ledge on one side, and sliding placidly into a pool on the other side (possibly only the latter during low flow periods). The next section up is a small punchbowl type fall which pours into a small pothole at the brink of the large slides. Continuing further up will reveal a series of cascading steps that marks the top of the falls.
