Quartzite Falls

Description

This feature was illegally dynamited in 1993, altering the natural falls. It was formerly a class VI rapid consisting of a 6 foot drop with a powerful undertow which claimed several lives. After the series of blasts successfully altered the bedrock, the falls were a high class III/low class IV rapids. In 1995, the perpetrator fled to Australia and New Zealand, was eventually extradited and sentenced to 3-1/2 years and $95,000 in fines and restitution.
