About This Waterfall
From the stoplight in the center of Forks, follow Highway 101 north for 1.7 miles then turn right onto the Sitkum-Solduc Road (also signed as National Forest Road #29). Follow this road for 11.2 miles to where the falls can be seen in the gully below and to the right (east) of the road. If you cross the bridge over Rainbow Creek, you've got about two-thirds of a mile too far (you will also pass Upper Rainbow Creek Falls, which is visible through the trees just downstream from the bridge). Do not attempt to scramble directly down to the base of the falls where they are visible along the road, the slopes are too steep. Instead walk a few hundred feet west along the road, then descend through moderately open forest to the creek downstream of the falls, then walk along the stream bed for about a hundred feet up to its base. This modest fall along Rainbow Creek lies partially hidden from view in a small gully along the Sitkum-Solduc Road in Olympic National Forest. The falls slide over a two-stepped fall, dropping 35 feet in total - first as a broad curtain-style horsetail fall of 21 feet, then making a sharp 90-degree turn to the left, and splitting into two channels, rumbling over a cascade of 14 feet. The upper tier of the falls is rather evident from the road (assuming you look in the right spot), but the lower tier is all but hidden from view without scrambling down to the base of the falls. During periods of high water the falls may take on a considerably more tumultuous form, but during the drier months expect it to be reduced considerably since Rainbow Creek is not a terribly large stream.
