Name of Waterfall

Rainbow Falls

Description

Rainbow Falls is the major waterfall of the Ausable River, found at the head of the famous Ausable Chasm near Keeseville. The falls drop about 75 feet, generally split into two segments (merging into one broad fall during high water), with some smaller cascades just upstream. A second fall pours in to the gorge on the opposite wall from Rainbow Falls, formed by excess water returned to the river from the intake channel for the power station. The smaller fall which is formed from the wasteway for the power station intake channel has been erroneously referred to as Rainbow Falls by itself rather frequently, but in actuality the name belongs to the natural falls of the river. The falls were previously known as Birmingham Falls, and - according to Russell Dunn's Adirondack Waterfall Guide - in the 1800s it was known as both Anderson Falls and Long Shoot (Chute). At what point the names changed is not known.
