About This Waterfall
Reichenbachfall is one of the most famous waterfalls in Switzerland thanks in large part to Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories. The falls are said to consist of seven distinct tiers which drop a total of about 250 meters, with the uppermost tier (known as the Grand Reichenbachfall) being the largest at about 90 meters on its own. Topographic maps suggest the falls are more like 170 meters in all. It's not clear where the seven different tiers of the falls are situated in relation to the main fall, but at least one is found immediately below the big fall, and another just upstream. There are two smaller falls along the Rychenbach a short distance downstream where the Funicular used to shuttle people up to the viewpoint crosses the stream as well - whether these are considered to be part of the main falls is unclear (they most likely should not be considered part of the same falls). The Rychenbach is partially harnessed in a hydroelectric system, first about 300 meters upstream from the top of the falls, and then a second time at the base of the main part of the falls. The stream is greatly reduced in volume where the Funicular crosses the gorge below the falls as a result.
