About This Waterfall
Take Highway 1 east from the town of Hvolsvöllur for just over 20km, then turn north (left) onto Route 249 where signs point to Seljelandsfoss and Þórsmörk. The falls are visible from the highway when traveling east and are difficult to miss. Parking is found just a few hundred meters up Route 249, and will most likely be populated with dozens of cars and several tour buses.Seljalandsfoss is among the most famous and most accessible waterfalls in Iceland. The falls are prominently visible from the Ring Road when driving east from Hvolsvöllur and are a staple tourism attraction along the south side of the island. The falls plunge over a sheer undercut cliff, dropping some 200 feet into a small pool. We were not able to obtain an accurate measurement of the falls during our visit, but signs on site say the drop is 60m (195 feet), and other sources cite the drop as 65m (213 feet). Whatever the actual height, the falls leap over a deeply undercut cliff, which allows a trail to pass behind the falls, providing a less conventional view for those who wish to be a bit more adventurous. Because of the presence of the undercut, the falls can be blown around in the wind - violently at times even. Adjacent to the main falls there are about a half dozen other streams which form waterfalls along the same cliff, all of which appear to be formed by seeps or springs which bubble directly out of the top of the cliff. Two or three distinct falls occur immediately next to Seljalandsfoss, while the next two to the north can easily be seen along the trail which runs between the falls and Gljúfrafbúi (Gljúfrafoss) a short distance to the north. The name of this waterfall translated to english is Angel Falls.
