About This Waterfall
Selvallafoss is a small waterfall we stumbled on purely by chance when circumnavigating the Snæfellsness Peninsula. The falls occur along the stream Fossá as it drops over a multi-step cliff on its way to merge with the Selvallavatn in the valley below. The stream cascades over smooth bedrock shortly before the falls, then plunges 35 feet in a sheer leap, followed by another drop of 11 feet almost immediately, and a third of 17 feet another 100 feet downstream (which we didn't have time to photograph). On our visit, a small herd of Sheep was gathered along the grassy cliffs next to the falls, with one sleeping on a small stoop almost directly behind the upper tier of the falls. We are unsure whether this waterfall has a recognized name (it's marked on topographic maps just as "Foss"), so for the time being we're calling it after the nearby lake (Selvallavatn).
