About This Waterfall

Take Highway 1 east from the city of Selfoss and turn north on to Route 30 (just over 3km west of the bridge over the Þjorsá). Follow Route 30 north for 18.4km then turn right onto Route 32. Follow Route 32 for 53km to where it merges into Route 26 (26 comes in from the right as a gravel road) and then another 20km along Route 26 to the turn-off leading to Landmannalaugar (Route 208) on the right. Take Route 208 for just over 5.5km to two bridges spanning the Tungnaá at the inlet of Hrauneyjalón - one across the tailrace of the adjacent hydroelectric plant, and the second across the river itself. Between these two bridges is a gravel road branching left with a sign pointing to Sigöldufoss; follow this road for one-third of a kilometer then bear right to the parking area. Short trails lead down to the rim of the gorge adjacent to the falls. Note that Route 208 beyond the bridges below the falls becomes Route F208, which is driveable by high clearance, four wheel drive vehicles only (by law), but the falls should be accessible by any type of vechicle.Sigöldufoss is a modest waterfall along the Tungnaá set amid the extensive hydroelectric scheme in the upper basin of the Þjorsá. The falls are located in the natural channel of the Tungnaá where an adjacent tailrace extends out from a power plant which has siphoned off the majority of the river below the lake Sigöldulón. The falls plunge 33 feet in a horseshoe-shaped recess, breaking into as many as six distinct segments depending on how much water is present in the artificially reduced river. During periods of heavier discharge the whole ledge may become covered in water, stretching out to nearly 200 unbroken feet in width. Were the natural volume of the river allowed to resume its course over the falls, the height might increase by several feet due simply to the volume of water involved. Accentuating the falls is the often opalescent blue tinted pool at its base. While the Tungnaá is naturally a very silt-laden river, much of the bedload gets separated from the water in the reservoir upstream, so the water which is released through the spillway enters the gorge above the falls much cleaner (there are also several seeps which add pure spring water upstream of the falls as well). On the opposite side of the bridges below the falls, the blue water of the river and the turbid brown water coming from the power plant can be seen mingling at the inlet of the lake Hrauneyjalón.
