About This Waterfall
Sioux Falls may or may not be considered the best waterfall in South Dakota, but it is certainly the most visisted. Situated in downtown Sioux Falls, the state's largest city, the falls tumble over a series of rugged ledges, dropping a total of about 50 feet, with the largest individual fall being about 25 feet tall. The Big Sioux River is currently regulated by a hydroelectric system which bypasses the waterfall and affects its flow rate somewhat. The falls do not seem to diminish in volume to the point where it appears to be dry, but it only achieves its natural volume levels during flooding. A heavily landscaped park surrounds the falls and gives it a man-made and rather surreal feel, though the waterfall is entirely natural.
