About This Waterfall
From Reykjavik, take Highway 1 north from its junction with Highway 49, and proceed for 24km, then turn right onto Route 47, marked for Hvalfjörður (if you go straight, you'll enter the tunnel under the fjord and bypass the most direct route to the falls). Follow Route 47 for another 28.6km to where the falls will be seen on the right side of the road. Parking is available at the interpretive sign identifying the adjacent ruins.Sjavarfoss is a small roadside waterfall passed en route to the trail leading to Glymur, one of Iceland's biggest and best waterfalls. For this fact alone most people won't stop here, but the small stature of the falls doesn't do it any favors either. The stream Fossá drops about 25 feet over a basalt cliff in a slightly veiling form, literally just upstream of where the road crosses the creek. Adjacent to the falls is a ruined stone building of some sort, which makes a stop a bit more worthy for those interested in the history of the area.
