About This Waterfall

Park at a large turnout on the east side of the E134 about 2.4km east of the E134 / Route 13 junction. The falls are found in the gorge immediately below the road.Smørtjørnsfossen is located along the Stølselvi in a narrow gorge located near Skare and the junction of the E134 and Route 13. The falls rumble into a narrow gorge carved out of the granite bedrock, falling 34 meters (112 feet) in a thunderous roar. A series of paths lead from a picnic area along the E134 to viewpoints overlooking the gorge from the top of the falls, but best views of the falls are had from the rim of the canyon adjacent to the highway, across the canyon from the falls. For many years it wasn't clear whether this waterfall had a recognized name, but recently we've been referred to historical photographs which caption it as Smørtjørnsfossen. We had previously listed this entry as Stølsfossen.
