About This Waterfall
Snowgrass Falls is a surprisingly significant series of horsetails and sliding cascades along an unnamed stream which drains the plateau harboring Snowgrass Flat between Goat Creek and the Cispus River on the west side of the Goat Rocks. The falls consist of three primary sections, split apart by sections of smoothrock sliding cascades. The two uppermost tiers consist of almost back-to-back veiling horsetail type drops of about 30 feet and 54 feet respectively. The creek then immediately begins a short sliding cascade, then plunges over a 10-foot fall, almost immediately after which is a broad 73-foot tall fan-shaped veiling fall. The creek splits into two channels at the base of this fall, both sliding down cascades for about 20 feet and converging shortly before the top of the final drop, a sheer 90-foot plunge, is encountered. Unfortunately the stream shifts its orientation enough during the long descent that the whole series of falls will not be visible from any one location, however the upper half and lower half can be seen collectively from certain perspectives. The stream producing Snowgrass Falls is not at all insignificant, draining from an alpine basin on the south face of Old Snowy Mountain which extends to well over 7,000 feet above sea level. Due to the high elevation of the drainage basin a fair amount of permanent snow should linger through the summer to feed the stream, ensuring ample volume in the falls throughout the year - though the late summer flow will likely be reduced by as much as three-quarters.
