About This Waterfall
Stepped Falls is located adjacent to Stinson Lake Road where it crosses Brown Brook, approximately one mile north of the northern end of Stinson Lake, or 3.3 miles west of Ellsworth. The most direct route to the falls from Interstate 93 is to take the Waterville Valley exit, then head west on Route 49 (Campton Village Road) to its junction with US 3. Turn south (left) onto Route 3, then immediately bear right onto Dan Web Road, and shortly after, turn right again onto Ellsworth Hill Road, which becomes Stinson Lake Road in Ellsworth after 4.3 miles.Stepped Falls is a modest waterfall along Brown Brook on the south side of Mount Kineo near Stinson Lake. The falls drop a total of 35 feet in three distinct steps, with drops of approximately 5, 15, and 15 feet respectively - when surveyed in 2008 we didn't take specific measurements of each step's height. The exposed bedrock at the lower tier of the falls stretches to nearly 50 feet across, which suggests that the falls may swell to rather impressive scales during the freshet or during periods of flooding. The drainage basin of Brown Brook upstream of Stepped Falls covers an area of approximately 3.2 square miles, and features extensive areas of marsh land, which will help to regulate the flow of the stream and ensure it retains a consistent flow through the dry summer months.
