About This Waterfall
Storhoggfossen has been a difficult waterfall to track down for a number of reasons. Though the exact location of the falls has not been 100% confirmed as of yet, we feel that the provided coordinates are the right location given the limited information available. What seems to be certain is that the falls occur within Ulladalen in Suldal. One source suggested the falls occur along the river Ulla itself, however there are no waterfalls as tall as Storhoggfossen has been reported to be along that stream. The most likely candidate is therefore the stream Kvennåna which flows into the Ulla at the farm Rabbane and originates in several large lakes further upstream. Topographic maps mark a waterfall at the location where this stream enters Ulladalen, but not by name. This waterfall is however not so much a waterfall but a long series of cascades over boulders and talus. The total drop of the cascades is approximately 160 meters (525 feet), whereas the height we had seen previously attributed to Storhoggfossen was 210 meters - the discrepancy could either be due to poor estimation, or it could be related to a measurement related to hydroelectric generating capacity of the stream. The Kvennåna has been diverted and harnessed for hydroelectric generation at the outlet of Sandsavatnet further upstream from Storhoggfossen. While there is some natural runoff which should reach the falls, outside of periods of heavy snow melt when the capacity of the lake's dam has been exceeded, this waterfall doesn't appear to flow much, if at all. Without a large volume of water, chances are the stream will sink beneath the large boulders for the majority of the descent down the falls, rendering it effectively invisible.
