About This Waterfall

Tahoma Cascades are a series of cascades about one-third of a mile downstream of Narada Falls along the Paradise River in Mount Rainier National Park. The falls consist of a series of "s" shaped slides and cascades, which get progressively steeper, culminating in a plunging 25 foot tall chute followed by a steep runout through a swath of huge boulders which have cleaved off the adjacent cliff. The falls can be pretty plainly heard from the Wonderland Trail between the Paradise River camp and Narada Falls, but only fleeting glimpses through the trees near the bottom are had from the trail, scrambling down to the river (which is steep and moderately brushy) is necessary to see the falls. An entry in Aubrey Haines' book "Mountain Fever" indicates that this waterfall was named and discovered by Arthur Knight (who was also responsible for discovering and naming Narada Falls just upstream), his wife, and Jessie Barlow. A specific date for this discovery does not seem to be indicated but it appears likely that it may have taken place as early as 1893 while scouting potential routes for the original road to Paradise. We had previously listed this entry as Sidewinder Cascades having assumed it to not ever been named.
