About This Waterfall
In the city of Mossfellsbær, depart Highway 1 onto Route 36 - liberally signed for Þingvellir, Geysir, Gullfoss, and the Golden Circle. Follow Route 36 east for 17.3km, then turn left onto Route 48 and continue another 5.6km to where a sign marks the falls and a small parking area. Clear views are obtained by walking a few steps down to a promontory along the canyon. While the prime waterfall attraction along Iceland's famous Golden Circle route is undoubtedly Gullfoss, just a short detour off the main road one can find Þórufoss - a scenic and not nearly as powerful waterfall which drops 54 feet over a gently rounded cliff, stretching to about 100 feet in width. The other waterfalls which can easily be visited along the Golden Circle route are considerably more powerful, so the much more gentle nature of this one is a nice contrast - al least when snowmelt isn't actively fueling the stream.
