About This Waterfall
Thunder Falls flows from an unnamed lake at the toe of the Summit Glacier, itself found high on a ridge above LeConte Bay just off Fredrick Sound east of Petersburg. Though no official measurement has been known to have been taken, topographic data suggests the falls drop a total of at least 1,800 feet and possibly as much as 2,400 feet, which would make it a strong candidate for the tallest waterfall in Alaska, and one of the 10 tallest in the United States. The falls are easily viewed from boats touring LeConte Bay and Glacier. We had previous listed this entry as Summit Glacier Falls, but it seems that Thunder Falls is indeed the accepted (if only colloquially) name for this waterfall, so it has been re-named in the database accordingly.
