About This Waterfall
Tin Mine Falls is occasionally cited as the tallest waterfall in Australia. It has been claimed that it was measured using a plumb line in 1990 by Dr. John Pease to be 420 meters (1,381 feet) tall. The fact that there are no cliffs in the area which are even remotely that tall which would allow the use of a plumb line to arrive at an accurate measurement suggests this claim and / or measurement are wholly incorrect. New South Wales topographic maps do mark the cliff band adjacent to the falls as 40 meters in height, so it's possible the measurement was instead 42 meters instead of 420 meters - this would presumably only account for the upper tier of the falls. Topographic maps indicate the total drop of the falls to be in the vicinity of 120-140 meters in all. The upper and lower tiers of the falls are separated by about 130 linear meters, and what the gorge between the two drops looks like is not known. There are almost certainly a series of smaller falls and cascades within, but how tall any may be is not known. The lower tier of the falls is likely 50-60 meters tall.
