About This Spring

## Overview Tonkawa Springs is a natural spring-fed recreation area located approximately 12 miles north of Nacogdoches in eastern Texas. The creek here is formed by a bubbling ground spring that feeds a stream flowing into a sizable swimming hole, roughly 100–150 feet in diameter. Named after the Tonkawa people — a Native American tribe historically present across central and eastern Texas — the springs have long been a gathering place for outdoor recreation and community. Today, Tonkawa Springs operates as **Camp Tonkawa Springs Park and Campground**, a privately managed facility offering swimming, hiking, primitive camping, RV hookups, and more. The site has also served as a Boy Scout camp and a survival skills training camp over the years. A volleyball court and trail system round out the amenities. The campground charges fees for entry and various activities, and pricing can add up depending on what you plan to do. For current rates and reservations, visit [camptonkawa.com/rates.htm](http://www.camptonkawa.com/rates.htm) or call **936-564-8888**. **Address:** 4675 CR 153, Garrison, TX 75946 ## Directions Tonkawa Springs is located just a few miles east of Highway 259, about 12 miles north of Nacogdoches, TX, and roughly 5 miles south of Mt. Enterprise, TX. 1. From **Highway 259**, turn east onto **County Route 1087**. 2. Travel approximately **4.5 miles** east on CR 1087. 3. Turn **right (southeast)** onto **County Route 153**. 4. The entrance to Camp Tonkawa Springs will be on your right, about **100 yards** down CR 153. ## What to Expect The centerpiece of Tonkawa Springs is the natural spring and its swimming hole — a refreshing spot fed by cool groundwater bubbling up from below. The spring-fed creek creates a steady flow into the swimming area, which is large enough for groups to enjoy comfortably. Beyond swimming, visitors will find hiking trails winding through the East Texas piney woods, primitive campsites for those who prefer a rustic experience, and RV hookups for more comfortable stays. A volleyball court is available for group activities. The site tends to be popular, especially on weekends and during warmer months, so expect company. Arriving early or visiting on weekdays may offer a quieter experience. Because this is a managed campground, be prepared to pay entry and activity fees — check the campground's website or call ahead for the latest pricing and any seasonal closures.
