About This Waterfall
From the Yellowhead Highway in Clearwater, follow the Clearwater Valley Road (signed to Wells Gray Park) north for 4.3km to Candle Creek (watch for jersey barriers and a slight dip in the road). The trail begins on the left side of the road and drops steeply to the base of the falls in about 10 minutes.Candle Creek is the first perennial tributary to the Clearwater River which the Clearwater Valley Road crosses enroute to Wells Gray Provincial Park, but because it does so via a culvert rather than a bridge the crossing is seldom noticed. This is significant because immediately downstream of the crossing lies 200 foot tall Triple Decker Falls, an aptly named three-stepped fall tucked in a deep recess along the rim of the Spahats Plateau. The falls were originally known as Candle Creek Falls, but that name has since drifted downstream to a lower fall of lesser stature. The current name is obviously meant to be descriptive of the falls' stair-step appearance.
