About This Waterfall
From the south end of the town of Watkins Glen, take Route 414 south for 1.5 miles, then turn right onto Route 16 (Montour-Townsend Road). Continue for 4.3 miles then turn right onto Townsend Road. In just over one-third of a mile, bear left onto Van Zandt Hollow Road where the road forks. Continue for just over one mile, then stay straight onto Templar Road where Van Zandt Hollow Road makes a sharp switchback. Follow Templar Road for another 500 feet to where the Finger Lakes Trail crosses the road and park. Hike down the trail across Glen Creek, then pick up a boot path that leads downstream through a campsite to the base of the falls.Twin Falls is a small but pretty waterfall located high up in the Glen Creek drainage, far from the more touristy features within Watkins Glen. Here the stream drops over a scenic back-to-back fall with steps of 14 and 9 feet respectively, each with a small pool at its base. Neither fall drops truly vertically, but when the creek is running with more volume, both drops exhibit a nearly vertical form at least in part. Unfortunately thanks to the presence of a seemingly popular campsite just above the falls, the area around the waterfall is apparently frequently littered with trash (we didn't see much when we surveyed in May of 2018, but there was some) - if you visit, consider bringing a garbage bag along and help to make it a better location to see in the future. At this point in its length, Glen Creek has a drainage basin covering about 2.9 square miles. There are no standing water features contributing to the stream flow at this point, but much of the basin is forested, which will help to regulate ground water seeping to the surface. That said, the small basin area will work against this waterfall later in the season, and low flows should be anticipated in the summer outside of periods of heavy rain.Twin Falls is the accepted colloquial name of this waterfall, dating back to the 1950s, but it has also been known as Templar Falls due to its proximity to Templar Road.
