About This Waterfall

The falls on the Uncompahgre River are essentially man-made. When the Million Dollar Highway was constructed, the river was funneled into a box culvert and diverted from its natural course to prevent it undercutting the slope which the highway was build on. The culvert shifted the river about 160 feet to the south, where it now cascades about 200 feet in two steps, with a short stretch of flatter river in between.
