About This Waterfall
Uxafótafoss can be found immediately north of Highway 1 (the Ring Road) about 2.7km east of the gas station in the town of Vik - which is found about halfway between the towns of Hvolsvöllur and Kirkjubæjarklauster. A gravel road runs from the highway along side the stream to provide closer access to the falls (but as stated previously, not necessarily better views).Uxafótafoss is a moderately low volume, but fairly eye-catching waterfall which can be easily viewed from the Ring Road just a short distance east of the small coastal town of Vik. The falls drop down a narrow chasm set against high cliffs, falling perhaps 45 meters (150 feet) in four distinct steps - we were not able to get close enough to take an accurate measurement of the falls. A gravel road runs inland from the highway toward the falls, and it appears as if a path may allow for a further closer approach as well, however because of the twisting nature of the falls and the shape of the crevice where the falls descend, getting closer does not appear to yield a better view. We found the most unobstructed vista of the falls to be from just off the highway (from which point a telephoto lens is necessary to obtain a good photo however). We don’t know whether this waterfall has a recognized name, so we have called it after its stream - the name of which means "Ox Foot".
