About This Waterfall

In the 1880s the falls were named by and for park superintendant P.W. Norris (in a selfless act no doubt). In 1886 the foreman in charge of building the first road across the Solfatara Plateau gave the falls its current name in honor of Virgina Gibson, wife of Charles Gibson, who was the proprietor of the Yellowstone Park Association - the group that operated the hotels in the early days of the park's history. It is said that this name only stuck because the falls were mapped as such by a cartographer with an affinity for places named after States of the union.
