About This Waterfall

This is the waterfall most commonly known as either Kisangani Falls or Stanley Falls. The former name is actually accurate, but not commonly used. The latter is an outdated label stemming from the days of British exploration of the African continent. This cataract has commonly been misinterpreted to be Boyoma Falls, which occurs about 75 miles upriver from Kisangani. Wagenia Falls stretch the whole width of the Lualaba River and drop about 30 feet in two distinct but gradual steps. This waterfall is only significant for the volume of water in the river and for the fact that it impedes river navigation.Wagenia Falls was originally known as Stanley Falls, and the nearby city of Kisangani was once Stanleyville. The names Stanley Falls and later Boyoma Falls have been applied to several cataracts along a 200-mile stretch of the Lualaba River that are often grouped together as one.
