Wiesendanger Falls

Description

Wiesendanger Falls are located approximately 1.4 miles up the Larch Mountain Trail from the Multnomah Falls Lodge, and become visible just before the trail enters a series of switchbacks.Wiesendanger Falls is the first of the two major upper waterfalls along Multnomah Creek. The falls drop over a flat 55 foot ledge into a broad gorge overlooked by the switchbacking trail. Just downstream from the falls lies Dutchman's Tunnel, a precarious overhang of basalt creating a natural shelter for passers by. A plaque placed on the wall of the gorge approaching the falls commemorates its namesake. The falls were named in 1997 for Albert Wiesendanger, a Forest Service Ranger stationed for many years at Eagle Creek, and later as a private citizen, the driving force behing the Keep Oregon Green initiative. Before 1997, the falls had been known as Upper Multnomah Falls, Double Falls (grouped together with its upstream sibling Ecola Falls) and most recently Twanklaskie Falls.
