Springs in Arkansas

18 natural springs in Arkansas, United States

Arkansas, often called the "Natural State," features a diverse landscape ranging from the rugged Ozark Mountains in the north to the unique east-west ridges of the Ouachita Mountains in the south. Between these highlands lies the Arkansas River Valley, while the eastern portion of the state flattens into the Mississippi Alluvial Plain. The terrain is frequently covered in dense oak-hickory and pine forests, with elevations rising to over 2,700 feet at Mount Magazine. This geological variety creates a rich environment for groundwater resources and surface water features.

The state experiences a humid subtropical climate with abundant annual rainfall, typically averaging between 40 and 60 inches. The primary wet season occurs in spring, particularly from March through May, which is often the best time to visit springs for optimal flow. A secondary wet period often arrives in late autumn. While snowmelt contributes slightly in the higher elevations during late winter, the aquifers are primarily recharged by these seasonal rains. Conversely, late summer, especially August and September, tends to be the driest period, potentially reducing flow in smaller springs.

Visitors are encouraged to explore the scenic beauty and hydrological wonders that Arkansas has to offer. Whether hiking through the forested highlands or visiting the valleys, the state provides numerous opportunities to connect with nature. Always have spring water independently tested before drinking. Water quality can change with seasons and conditions.
