Description

Alvord Hot Springs is now free and no longer available. The Davis Family (owners of the Alvord Hot Springs) has torn down the structure and constructed a new one. It includes a parking lot and bathrooms, pay camping, sandbox, a store, showers, and an on-site caregiver. $5 per hour for access
Alvord can either be reached by the Fields-Denio Road from Burns or the south via Fields-Denio Road. From the north, drive 41 miles south along the dirt Fields-Denio Road (from Highway 78). Drive 23 miles north (12 mil paved) from the south to reach Alvord Hot Springs.

A small lake in the Alvord Desert on BLM Land north of Fields. Borax lake is heated by thermal vents that heat it to 95 degrees. It is near an old Borax Works station, where borax was mined. The borax was transported by mule train to Winnemucca in Nevada. You can still see remnants of the station.
It takes some driving and bumpy roads to reach the lake. You can drive all the way to the lake if you do not want to take the bike or walk route. The tiny clay/sand particles can damage your vehicle and seep into almost everything. Make sure to drink plenty of water.
Borax Hot Springs, which is located on BLM Land, contains very high levels of arsenic. This makes it unsafe for soaking.

Barnes is located to the southeast of Frenchglen. The small pool, fed by warm springs, is behind the ruins a former home.
Follow the Steens Mountain Loop Road approximately a quarter of a mile from Frenchglen to the signposted pullout and gate. You will reach your home site and the pool east of the access roads by hiking just under one mile.
