About This Waterfall
Located in the Sweet Creek Falls trail complex, south of Mapleton, in the Siuslaw National Forest. From Mapleton, follow Highway 126 east, across the Siuslaw River, and turn right onto Sweet Creek Road. Drive 11 miles along the Sweet Creek Road to the Homestead (Sweet Creek) Trailhead. Follow the Sweet Creek trail for 1/3 mile, to the plaque announcing the falls, along the trail, just above Punchbowl Canyon Falls .This pretty waterfall occurs along an unnamed tributary of Sweet Creek, immediately above the top of Punchbowl Canyon Falls . The falls slide about 35 feet into Sweet Creek, adjacent to another 8 foot fall along Sweet Creek. A metal plaque along the trail identifies the falls. There was some confusion in my mind as to whether this name applies to the tributary waterfall, or the 8 foot fall on Sweet Creek itself. Seeing as there is a much larger waterfall on Sweet Creek a very short distance downstream, I can only assume it applies to the tributary waterfall. The falls appear to flow year round, but look as if they are reduced to a trickle in the summer. The falls were named for Annice Marie Ellingson Johnson, a former secretary of Mapleton Elementary of 30 years, who was born and raised on a ranch on the banks of Sweet Creek.
