About This Waterfall
Bison Creek is crossed 12km south of Saskatchewan Crossing along the Icefields Parkway in Banff National Park. Park in the large pullout just north of the unmarked streambed (which is often dry). The falls are visible from the road.Bison Creek drains a modest catch basin on the southwest side of Mount Murchison, producing this waterfall where it intersects a cliff band as it descends to meet the Mistaya River in the valley below. The falls plunge about 200 feet, sometimes in two side-by-side streams depending on the volume of water present. The falls are a popular location for ice climbing in the area, and climbers have cited the drop as approximately 150 feet in height - we suspect this is an underestimate because the way the ice forms it doesn't reflect the actual height of the falls when it flows during the spring and summer. Its possible the drainage is entirely dependent on snowmelt to subsist and the falls may or may not consistently run dry by the autumn months.
