About This Waterfall

Blumenthal Falls is located at the north end of Short Sand Beach in Oswald West State Park. Park at the Short Sand Beach trailhead, located 5 3/4 miles north of Nehalem or 4 1/4 miles south of Arch Cape along Highway 101. Follow the trail gradually down hill to the walk-in campground, then follow signs to the beach. Its approximately one mile from the parking lot to the falls via a leisurely beach walk. Consult a tide table before embarking, however, as the high water line indicates the sea can cover the whole beach.Blumenthal Falls is one of a very few waterfalls in the Northwest which can be seen dropping into the Pacific Ocean without aid of a boat. Though technically the 45 foot falls don't drop into the ocean outside the highest tides, the beach-side setting is unique. Below the falls, particularly on the left, are interesting whithered rock formations - likely of the Sandstone family (but possibly Schist as well). At low tides the large boulders below the falls create many tide pools for viewing sea life. This is the only waterfall I've seen a Starfish at.The falls were named in honor of Ranger Dan Blumenthal, who in 1999 was shot and killed while working on duty at Oswald West State Park. Early postcards depicting the falls caption it as "Waterfall at Short Sand Beach". I had previously listed this one as Smugglers Cove Falls
