About This Spring

## Overview Burgdorf Hot Springs is a rustic, historic hot springs retreat nestled deep in the mountains of central Idaho, near the small town of McCall. Situated at an elevation of approximately 6,000 feet in the Payette National Forest, Burgdorf has been drawing visitors for well over a century. The hot springs were historically used by the Nez Perce people long before European settlers arrived in the area. In the late 1800s, a small mining community grew up around the springs, and a resort was eventually established to take advantage of the naturally heated mineral water. The original log cabins and rustic structures that remain on site lend Burgdorf an authentic, old-West atmosphere that is increasingly rare in the modern era. The hot springs feed a large, shallow outdoor pool where water temperatures typically range from around 100°F to 112°F (38°C–44°C), depending on the season and specific location within the pool. The mineral-rich water has historically been valued by visitors for its soothing, therapeutic qualities. The setting is remote and beautifully wild — surrounded by dense conifer forests with views of the rugged Idaho backcountry. Burgdorf Hot Springs operates as a privately managed facility on a seasonal basis, generally open from late spring through fall, with limited winter access depending on snow conditions. Rustic cabins are available for overnight stays, though amenities are intentionally minimal — there is no electricity or running water in the cabins, preserving the off-grid character of the place. Visitors should plan accordingly and check current operating status before making the trip. ## Directions 1. From McCall, Idaho, head north on Warren Wagon Road (Forest Road 21). 2. Continue on Warren Wagon Road for approximately 30 miles. The road is paved for the first portion but transitions to a well-maintained gravel/dirt road. 3. Watch for the signed turnoff to Burgdorf Hot Springs on the left side of the road. 4. Turn left and follow the short access road to the hot springs facility. **Note:** The road can be rough, especially in spring or after heavy rain. A high-clearance vehicle is recommended, and 4WD may be necessary during muddy conditions or early/late in the season. In winter, the road is typically not plowed beyond a certain point, and access may require snowmobiles or cross-country skis. ## What to Expect Upon arrival at Burgdorf Hot Springs, visitors will find a large, natural-bottom soaking pool fed by geothermal springs. The pool is outdoors and open to the sky, offering a wonderfully immersive experience surrounded by towering pines and mountain scenery. Water temperature varies across the pool — areas closer to the source tend to be hotter, while the edges may be cooler and more comfortable for extended soaking. The facility includes several historic log cabins available for rent, a changing area, and basic restroom facilities (typically outhouses). There is no electricity, cell service, or modern plumbing on site, so visitors should bring their own food, water, lighting, and supplies. Firewood may be available for cabin stoves. Burgdorf is a family-friendly destination, and swimsuits are required. The remote location means light pollution is virtually nonexistent, making it an exceptional spot for stargazing on clear nights. Wildlife sightings — including deer, elk, and various bird species — are common in the surrounding forest. Visitors should be aware that the hot springs are at a remote, high-elevation location. Weather can change quickly, and the access road may become impassable in poor conditions. It is wise to check road conditions and facility availability before departing, especially outside of peak summer months.
