About This Spring
## Overview Conundrum Hot Springs is one of Colorado's most iconic and sought-after natural hot springs, nestled high in the Elk Mountains near Aspen at an elevation of approximately 11,200 feet. Located within the Maroon Bells–Snowmass Wilderness, these free, primitive hot springs reward hikers with a stunning alpine setting surrounded by towering peaks, wildflower meadows, and pristine mountain scenery. The springs consist of several rock-lined soaking pools of varying temperatures, fed by geothermally heated water that emerges from the earth along Conundrum Creek. The hot springs sit at the head of Conundrum Creek Valley, with water temperatures in the pools historically reported to range from around 100°F to 104°F (38°C–40°C), though temperatures can vary depending on snowmelt, rainfall, and seasonal conditions. The geothermal activity in this area is linked to the same volcanic and tectonic forces that shaped the broader Elk Mountains and the Colorado Mineral Belt — a zone of mineralization and geothermal energy stretching across the state. Conundrum Hot Springs has long been a beloved destination for backpackers and hot spring enthusiasts. Due to its popularity and the environmental sensitivity of the wilderness area, the U.S. Forest Service manages the site and requires overnight visitors to obtain a permit during peak season (typically from late May through early October). Campfires are prohibited in the area, and Leave No Trace principles are strictly enforced. Day-use visitors should also check current regulations before heading out. ## Directions 1. From Aspen, Colorado, head west on CO-82 toward the roundabout at Castle Creek Road. 2. Turn south (left) onto Castle Creek Road and continue for approximately 5 miles. 3. Turn right onto Conundrum Creek Road (Forest Road 128). Follow this road to the Conundrum Creek Trailhead parking area at the end of the road. 4. From the trailhead, hike the Conundrum Creek Trail approximately 8.5 miles one way to reach the hot springs. The trail follows Conundrum Creek through aspen groves, evergreen forests, and alpine meadows, gaining roughly 2,500 feet in elevation. 5. The GPS coordinates for the hot springs are approximately 39.012213, -106.891153. *Note: The hike is long and strenuous, and most visitors choose to backpack in and camp overnight near the springs. A wilderness permit is required for overnight stays during the regulated season. Check with the White River National Forest or the Aspen Ranger District for current permit requirements and trail conditions before your trip.* ## What to Expect Reaching Conundrum Hot Springs requires a committed effort — the 8.5-mile trail is well-maintained but gains significant elevation, making it a full-day hike or, more commonly, an overnight backpacking trip. The trail passes through beautiful scenery the entire way, including dense aspen forests, creek crossings, and expansive alpine meadows with views of surrounding 14,000-foot peaks. At the springs, visitors will find several natural rock-lined pools situated along the creek in a dramatic mountain basin. The pools vary in size and temperature, with the hottest pools closest to the source. Cold creek water can be mixed in to adjust the temperature. The setting is breathtaking — soaking in warm mineral water while gazing up at rugged peaks and starry skies is an experience many consider among the best in Colorado. The area around the springs has designated camping spots, and visitors should plan to camp at least 100 feet from the water source and the pools. There are no facilities — no restrooms, no trash cans, and no potable water infrastructure. All waste must be packed out, and human waste must be managed according to current Forest Service regulations (WAG bags may be required). Seasonal considerations are important: the trail and springs are most accessible from late June through September, though snow can linger at higher elevations well into July. Creek crossings can be challenging during peak snowmelt in early summer. Winter and early spring access requires backcountry skiing or snowshoeing skills and avalanche awareness. Weather at 11,200 feet can change rapidly — afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer, and temperatures drop significantly at night even in midsummer.
