About This Waterfall

From the ferry dock in Eidsdal take Route 91 east for just under 4km to Norddal and turn right after crossing the Storselva (this is the continuation of Route 91). Continue for another 2 1/4km to the top of a modest hill, the falls can be seen across the valley at this point. To reach the base of the falls, turn right at the top of the hill, crossing the river and then stay straight (left) where the road makes a V-fork. This secondary road will climb for 7/10km to the bridge at the base of the falls.Dyrdalsfossen is a multi-stepped horsetail style fall located in Norddalen which drops for approximately 285 meters (935 feet) in total, split into four major leaps with minor cascades between each. The final tier of the falls, which drops 69 meters (227 feet) can easily be seen from the bridge along Hatlestadfjellvegen which crosses the Dyrdøla. Below the bridge the stream accelerates down a series of sliding cascades which could potentially be considered an additional part of the falls and bring its cumulative height to well over 300 meters, but there does not appear to be any easy way to view these cascades so we have opted to not include them in the total height for now. Unfortunately, because the falls feature a slight bend in direction of flow as it drops down the mountainside, it may not be possible to view the entire series collectively. From the base only the final tier is visible, and from across the valley the majority of the lower tier is obstructed while the upper tiers are mostly visible. When we surveyed the falls in June of 2011 we could not find any location to safely park to photograph the upper tiers of the falls, but the falls can be seen from stretches of road throughout the valley.
