About This Waterfall
Heggurfossen is visible about halfway down the north wall of the Tafjord. The best viewpoint we found which was accessible by car was found along Route 93 between the towns of Sylte and Tafjord, about 2.45km east of Highway 63 in Sylte – there’s a large pullout on the right side of the road where the falls can be seen in the distance (the power lines will be in the way, so if you’re looking for a clearer photograph you may have to go elsewhere).Heggurfossen is a waterfall of considerable height but lesser significance found near the end of Tafjorden. Heading in a high basin which features little (if any) permanent snow or ice, the Heggurelva meanders gently toward the edge of the Tafjorden where it cascades down a narrow sluice in a series of smaller falls before launches into a final single horsetailing fall which drops approximately 510 meters (1675 feet), first sliding steeply then entering into a sheer free-fall before striking the side of the cliff and slowly reverting to a less-vertical fall in a slight concave shape. The total drop of the falls is approximately 620 meters (2,035 feet) but the upper portions of the falls will likely only be visible from atop the mountains directly across the fjord, or from an aircraft. The stream feeding the falls isn’t terribly large but it doesn’t appear to be small enough to run dry during the late summer. Viewing the falls is perhaps the biggest obstacle in visitation. The falls are plainly visible from a distance from near the town of Sylte, but as can be seen in the attached photographs a series of power lines are strung across the Tafjorden between the town and falls, which will inevitably remain in the way. The best option for viewing the falls is by boat on the fjord itself.
