About This Waterfall
Green Mountain Falls is a moderately tall but low volume waterfall found along the upper reaches of Wise Creek in the valley of the Middle Fork of the Snoqualmie River. The falls drop a total of 138 feet as a single tier cascading type fall which slides and veils down an exposure of granitic bedrock. The falls drop in a perpendicular orientation to the overall path of Wise Creek as it tumbles down the mountain side, such that if viewed from the air the stream would appear to make sharp nearly 90-degree bends both at the top and bottom of the falls. The falls twist slightly off-axis to the left as it cascades, rendering the entire drop almost impossible to see from any given location (largely thanks to thick encroaching forest). The basin above the falls covers approximately 0.6 square miles in area, and tops out at around 4,500 feet in elevation, with the entirety of the drainage falling on the steep eastern slope of the mountainside. While this area does receive moderate winter snowpack, Wise Creek is largely fueled by rainfall. Once the winter's snow has melted off, without sustained rain to keep the stream flow up, it will quickly reduce to a trickle and may run dry by the end of July. The appendix of Greg Plumb's "Waterfall Lover's Guide" books refers to this waterfall as Upper Green Mountain Falls, while the further downstream Wise Falls is incorrectly referred to as Green Mountain Falls. As that name is not appropriate for the downstream waterfall, it felt more appropriate to apply it to this fall instead.
