About This Waterfall
Wise Falls is a surprisingly significant multi-stepped fall tucked in a hidden gorge just a few hundred feet off of the popular Middle Fork Road outside of the town of North Bend. The falls consist of six distinct tiers, dropping a total of 85 feet in a run of about 230 feet. The three uppermost tiers can be viewed collectively as the stream steps down 18, 6, and 11 feet. The fourth tier (9-feet) is situated immediately below the third tier, but because of how the stream turns it can't really be seen with the others). The fifth and sixth tiers then drop 13 and 28 feet respectively as the creek squeezes through the narrowest portion of the gorge, punching through a small wad of logs in the process - during periods of low flow, the logs greatly obstruct the visibility of part of the lower tiers of the falls. While Wise Creek does flow year round, the drainage basin is not terribly large and the volume of water present will be greatly reduced in the summer and early autumn months. The trade-off here is the low flow in the summer makes access to the bottom of the falls considerably easier. We had previously listed this entry as Green Mountain Falls, as it appears as such in the appendix of Greg Plumb's Waterfall Lovers Guide books. However it seems that the colloquially accepted title is that of the creek instead. In turn, we have co-opted the name Green Mountain Falls and applied it to one of the falls further upstream (which is actually on Green Mountain).
