About This Spring

## Overview Halfway Hot Springs is a beloved natural hot spring destination nestled in the rugged wilderness north of Nakusp, British Columbia, in the heart of the Central Kootenay region. Known locally as one of the Kootenays' hidden gems, this site offers a remarkably natural soaking experience — think rock-lined pools fed by geothermally heated water, surrounded by towering old-growth forest and the sounds of a rushing river. Unlike many commercialized hot springs in BC, Halfway Hot Springs retains a wild, backcountry character. The site features multiple soaking options: main pools tucked into the woods, river pools formed by natural rock walls right along the water's edge, gorge pools accessible via a short hike, and waterfall pools where cascading water has carved out natural basins. The variety of pools — each with its own temperature and setting — makes this a standout destination for hot spring enthusiasts. The site also doubles as a campground, with over 20 vehicle-accessible campsites and more than 10 hike-in tent sites, all available on a first-come, first-served basis. It's a popular spot during summer months, so arriving early or on weekdays is advisable. **Note:** The GPS coordinates listed for this location (50.242747, -117.79224) may not reflect the exact trailhead or parking area. User-submitted coordinates of approximately 50.5037, -117.7837 have also been reported. It is recommended to cross-reference with local maps or navigation apps before heading out, as cell service in the area can be unreliable. ## Directions Starting from the town of Nakusp, BC: 1. Head **north on Highway 23** along the eastern shore of Upper Arrow Lake. 2. Pass the **KBR Campground**, then the **Mt. Abriel Recreation Area**, and **Ione Falls** — all on your left. 3. Continue until you reach a **signed intersection/fork** in the road. 4. **Turn right** at this intersection and continue along the road for several kilometres. The hot springs and campground will be at the end of this road. **Important landmark tip:** If you find yourself passing **Halcyon Hot Springs Resort** on your left, you have gone too far on Highway 23 and missed the turnoff. Double back to the intersection and take the correct right-hand turn. The road to the springs is unpaved and can be rough in spots, so a vehicle with decent clearance is recommended, especially in spring or after heavy rain. ## What to Expect Halfway Hot Springs offers a truly immersive natural hot spring experience. Here's what visitors can look forward to: - **Main Pools:** Several small, rock-lined soaking pools are scattered through the forest, each offering a slightly different temperature. These are the most accessible and popular pools on site. - **River Pools:** Natural rock wall formations along the river create pools where hot spring water mixes with cool river water. You can literally soak in the river while adjusting your comfort by moving closer to or farther from the hot water source. - **Gorge Pools:** A roughly 7-minute hike from the main area leads to pools perched at the edge of a scenic gorge — a more secluded and dramatic soaking spot. - **Waterfall Pools:** Waterfalls in the area have carved out natural basins that collect warm water, creating some of the most picturesque soaking spots on site. The campground is well-suited for both car campers and backpackers, with a range of facilities to support overnight stays. The area also offers hiking opportunities in the surrounding forest. Because this is a natural, minimally developed site, visitors should be prepared for rustic conditions. There are no lifeguards, and pool temperatures can vary. The site can get busy on summer weekends, so plan accordingly. Respect the natural environment by packing out all trash and leaving pools as you found them.
