Hall Falls

Hall Falls is a fairly low volume waterfall found on a small unnamed drainage which flows off of the south face of the Cowlitz Chimneys into Boulder Creek within Mount Rainier National Park. The total drop of the falls appears to be in the vicinity of 200 feet, with the tallest individual drop falling about 60 feet. If the stream is flowing well enough, the falls can be distantly seen from the Wonderland Trail around the high point on Cowlitz Ridge about a mile south of Indian Bar. However the basin which feeds the falls is fairly small and the stream will rely heavily on snow melt to sustain a good flow through the summer. By late summer the stream will be just a trickle. We attempted to spot the falls when hiking along the Wonderland Trail in August of 2017 but the streamflow was too low and thick smoke from nearby forest fires muddied the atmosphere enough that it was near impossible to see from almost 2 miles away.Hall Falls was marked by name on David H. White's 1928 Atlas of Pierce County, but has not been observed marked by name on any other map since. It's possible that the name of the falls was coined by White or by contributors to his mapping efforts. The falls were likely named for either Edward S. Hall, the first full time superintendent of the Mount Rainier National Park (beginning in 1910), or George B. Hall who operated a livery business at Longmire Springs in 1909.
