About This Waterfall

Hilding Falls is plunge type waterfall found along an unnamed branch of Boulder Creek in the lower part of Ohanapecosh Park in Mount Rainier National Park. The falls drop approximately 110 feet over a nearly sheer cliff into a narrow ravine. A series of cascades which drop a total of about 350 feet over a run of about 670 linear feet occurs a short distance upstream of this waterfall as well. It's likely this set of cascades will be split to be considered a separate waterfall, but its possible it might be considered part of Hilding Falls as well, which would bring the total height up to nearly 500 feet in all. There are no trails approaching Hilding Falls, but distant views (about 1.7 miles away) are available from the Wonderland Trail around the high point on Cowlitz Ridge, about a mile south of Indian Bar.Hilding Falls was marked by name on David H. White's 1928 Atlas of Pierce County, but has not been observed marked by name on any other map since. It's possible that the name of the falls was coined by White or by contributors to his mapping efforts. The name may also predate the 1928 map since several other waterfalls in the area have names originating 10-15 years earlier as well.
