About This Spring

## Overview Jerry Johnson Hot Springs is a beloved backcountry hot spring destination nestled along the Lochsa River corridor in the Clearwater National Forest of central Idaho. Located near U.S. Highway 12 — the historic Lewis and Clark route through the Bitterroot Mountains — these natural geothermal pools have long been a favorite stop for road-trippers, hikers, and hot spring enthusiasts traveling between Missoula, Montana, and Lewiston, Idaho. The hot springs consist of several soaking pools of varying temperatures situated along Warm Springs Creek. The pools are naturally formed and lined with rocks, offering a rustic, undeveloped soaking experience surrounded by old-growth cedar and fir forest. Water temperatures in the pools typically range from around 104°F to 111°F (40°C–44°C), though temperatures can vary depending on the season, recent rainfall, and snowmelt mixing with the geothermal water. The springs are fed by geothermally heated water rising through faults in the Idaho Batholith, a massive granitic intrusion that underlies much of central Idaho and is responsible for numerous hot springs throughout the region. Jerry Johnson Hot Springs are free to visit and are located on National Forest land. The area has historically been clothing-optional, and visitors should be aware that this tradition continues. The springs are accessible year-round, though winter access can be more challenging due to snow on the trail. The site is named after an early settler and prospector who lived in the area during the late 1800s. ## Directions 1. The trailhead for Jerry Johnson Hot Springs is located along U.S. Highway 12, approximately 150 miles west of Missoula, Montana, or about 95 miles east of Lowell, Idaho. 2. Look for the Warm Springs Pack Bridge trailhead and parking area on the south side of Highway 12, near mile marker 152. 3. The GPS coordinates for the springs are approximately 46.4725, -114.8856. 4. From the trailhead parking area, cross the footbridge over the Lochsa River and follow Trail #49 (Warm Springs Creek Trail) upstream. 5. The hike to the main hot spring pools is roughly 1 mile (about 1.6 km) along a mostly flat, well-worn trail that follows Warm Springs Creek. 6. You will encounter the first pools on the left side of the trail along the creek. Additional pools can be found a short distance further up the trail. ## What to Expect The hike in is relatively easy and suitable for most fitness levels — roughly one mile on a mostly flat forested trail along Warm Springs Creek. The trail can be muddy in spring and after rain, so sturdy footwear is recommended. Once you arrive, you'll find multiple natural rock-lined pools at different elevations along the creek bank. The upper pools tend to be hotter, while the lower pools closer to the creek are cooler as they mix with cold creek water. Visitors often adjust the temperature by moving rocks to allow more or less creek water into the pools. The setting is stunning — towering conifers, the sound of the creek, and a true wilderness atmosphere. The springs can get busy on summer weekends and holidays, so visiting on weekdays or during the shoulder seasons (late spring or early fall) offers a more peaceful experience. During winter, the trail may be snow-covered and icy, and Highway 12 itself can be subject to winter driving conditions. However, the contrast of soaking in hot water surrounded by snow is a memorable experience for those prepared for the conditions. There are no facilities at the springs — no restrooms, changing areas, or trash receptacles. Visitors are expected to pack out all trash and practice Leave No Trace principles. A few dispersed camping spots can be found along Highway 12 near the trailhead. The Lochsa River corridor also offers excellent opportunities for fishing, kayaking, and wildlife viewing.
