About This Waterfall
Salto La Cortina is a large plunging waterfall of notable volume that occurs in a major alcove at the head of the canyon which bisects Canaima National Park's famous Auyan Tepui from north to south. Because there are no roads or trails to the falls it can only be seen from the air and is rarely photographed in following. We have seen several sources suggesting the falls drop about 980 feet (300 meters) and as much as 1,150 feet (350 meters) but the few photographs we've seen of the falls make it appear as if it could be significantly taller still. Because the only access to this waterfall is aerial, the height has presumably only been approximated and cannot be considered to be anywhere near accurate in result. The falls are commonly marked on maps of Auyan Tepui and Canaima National Park but because there seem to be so few photographs positively identifying the waterfall by name, exactly which waterfall this name applies to cannot be 100% confirmed. Assuming that the waterfall found at the coordinates listed here is the correct one to bear the name Salto La Cortina (Curtain Falls), we have also seen it referred to as Gran Salto, but if Cortina turns out to be a different waterfall, then this waterfall would more than likely be properly titled Gran Salto.
