About This Waterfall
Lower Hamma Hamma Falls is the third of three reasonably accessible waterfalls found along the Hamma Hamma River (though not actually the lowermost falls along the river). Unlike the other waterfalls along the river, this one's status is a bit more questionable - though not for lack of trying. At this site, the Hamma Hamma River tumbles over and through several massive boulders which have choked a narrow point in the river, creating a multi-segmented cascade which drops 37 feet in short order. The height of the falls is certainly not in question, but instead how it's formed. The higher volume of the river coupled with the scale of the boulders makes it difficult to determine whether the falls are formed due to rocks which have fallen into the river, or if there is an underlying bedrock ledge which forms the basis of the falls. While its underlying structure may not make it as impressive a waterfall as its upstream sibling, the drainage area is considerably larger than at Hamma Hamma Falls found just two miles upstream; over 20 square miles of area ranging from high alpine meadows to the low valley ensures that a significant volume of water will always pour over this waterfall, at least partially obscuring the large boulders, however as there is no permanent snow or ice feeding into the river, once the winter snow melts out the volume of the river will still drop in volume by a noticeable amount.
