About This Spring
## Overview Lussier Hot Springs is a free, natural hot spring nestled in the stunning Kootenay Mountains of southeastern British Columbia, near the western boundary of Whiteswan Lake Provincial Park. Situated along the banks of the Lussier River, this popular destination draws visitors year-round with its series of rock-lined soaking pools fed by geothermally heated water that emerges from the mountainside. The hot springs sit downstream from the Whiteswan Lake recreational area and its popular fishing lakes. The town of Canal Flats lies to the west, and Kootenay National Park — the gateway to Banff National Park — is roughly an hour's drive to the north. Locals have long attributed healing properties to the mineral-rich waters, and the springs have been a beloved gathering spot for generations of British Columbians and travelers passing through the East Kootenay region. ## Directions 1. From **Canal Flats**, head east on **Highway 93/95** and watch for the provincial park signage directing you toward **Whiteswan Lake Provincial Park**. 2. Turn east and travel approximately **4.5 km (about 3 miles)** to the junction with the **Whiteswan Forestry Road** (gravel). 3. Turn right onto the Whiteswan Forestry Road and follow it for roughly **17.5 km (about 11 miles)**. The road is an active logging road — expect a rough, unpaved surface with possible washboard sections and logging truck traffic. 4. At the **17.5-kilometre mark**, you'll find the **Lussier Hot Springs parking area** on the right side of the road, near the park's western boundary. Signage marks the pullout. 5. From the parking area, a short, steep trail leads down to the river and the hot spring pools. The trail is maintained by the park service but is not lit — **bring a headlamp or flashlight if arriving after dark**. *Note:* The road is passable in a standard two-wheel-drive vehicle during dry conditions, but a higher-clearance vehicle is recommended, especially in winter or after heavy rain. If you're continuing to the campgrounds at Whiteswan Lake, keep heading north on the forestry road past the hot springs. ## What to Expect Three natural soaking pools await at the bottom of the trail, each at a different temperature. The **largest and hottest pool** is closest to the mountainside where the thermal water emerges, while the **cooler pools** extend toward the Lussier River, where cold river water mixes in. The pools are formed with natural rock, giving the site an authentic, undeveloped feel — there are no concrete structures or admission fees. The contrast between the hot spring water and the cold river is one of the highlights: many visitors alternate between the steaming pools and a quick dip in the river for a natural hot-cold plunge experience. **Facilities:** Two outhouses near the parking area serve as both restrooms and changing areas. There are no other amenities — no showers, no concessions, and no garbage service, so pack out everything you bring in. **Etiquette & Rules:** - A **bathing suit is required**. - If bringing beverages, use **cans only — no glass**. Broken glass is extremely dangerous in and around the pools. - The springs can get lively on weekend nights, with local visitors socializing into the evening. Rangers periodically check the area to ensure everyone's safety. **Seasonal Notes:** The hot springs are accessible year-round, though winter access along the forestry road can be challenging. Soaking in the steaming pools surrounded by snow-covered mountains is a memorable experience, but plan for icy road conditions and shorter daylight hours. Summer weekends tend to be the busiest times — arriving early or on a weekday offers a more peaceful soak. The setting is spectacular in every season: the Lussier River rushes past, old-growth forest lines the valley, and the Kootenay Mountains rise on all sides. It's a wonderful spot for families, couples, or groups of friends looking for a free, scenic hot spring experience in the Canadian Rockies.
