About This Waterfall
Mattenbachfälle is a tall, low volume waterfall which descends the eastern wall of Switzerland's Lauterbrunnen valley. The falls had initially been estimated to stand 840 meters (2,755 feet) in height, however in 2020 the Vertical Water Canyoning Team, a group of canyoneers who are setting out to abseil the tallest waterfalls on the planet, successfully descended Mattenbachfälle by rope and measured its total height at approximately 930 meters (3,050 feet), which makes Mattenbachfälle the tallest waterfall on the Eurasian continent. The stream Mattenbach has a drainage area of only 0.9 square kilometers, which makes it heavily reliant on melting snow or rain. During periods of extended drought in the late summer months there is a chance the falls could dry out.
