About This Waterfall

Middle Fork Nooksack Falls is the largest and most significant waterfall found along its namesake river (below the toe of the Deming Glacier at least) on Mount Baker. The falls occur about 2 miles downstream of the toe of the Deming Glacier where the river plunges over a step of volcanic bedrock in the valley floor and thunders a total of 81 feet in steps of 16 and 66 feet respectively. The Andesite(?) outcrop which forms the falls feel oddly out of place when the immediate surrounding landscape is taken into consideration; both upstream and downstream the river has cut through deep deposits of Glacial till and alluvium, in places dozens and dozens of feet thick, with little other indication that the bedrock below has any influence on the river's course. The Middle Fork Nooksack River is sourced in the Deming Glacier on Mount Baker, one of the largest on the mountain. This high up along the length of the river the stream will rely more on the glacial melt for sustenance than not, so the falls will appear their fullest during the warmest months of the year between June and October. There should however be ample volume in the river at any time of year that the area is not snow-bound however.
